I did a repair using Command+Option keys upon launch. In the past I would have thought that the alias would show in the Choose Library list. I tried adding an alias in the Pictures folder on my internal drive pointing to the library on my EHD. I can see my iCloud folders in the sidebar, which also indicates this is the System Photo Library since you can't enable iCloud Photo Sharing otherwise. My library is designated as the System Photo Library in preferences. From that point until I restart again, I can close and reopen Photos without a problem. When I click on "Open Other." I get an empty list.Ĭlicking on "Other Library." and moving to my EHD, I can then find my Photos library and select it. But I can connect the drive via USB as well, and that doesn't make a difference.

Like other posts, my Photos library is on an external HD. I am running 10.11.4 but this has been going on for several El Capitan patch levels. When I boot my MacBook Pro and then try to open Photos I get the "Photos cannot find the System Photo Library". I have seen this issue in a number of other posts, but I don't see any solutions.
